Steam and Community editions compared
The Community edition is completely free, forever, with a permanent commitment to continued updates. All ECHO Pro features are free without purchase, sponsorship or compiling it yourself. The Steam edition is purchased through Steam; ECHO Pro DLC unlocks its advanced features, alongside Steam Workshop, Cloud, achievements and friend status.
Community means ECHO NEXT distributed through the website / GitHub. Steam means ECHO in the Steam store. They have separate release and maintenance paths; matching feature names can have different implementations, interfaces and delivery schedules.
Community: completely free, with permanent updates
Section titled “Community: completely free, with permanent updates”Our promise is clear: ECHO Community is completely free, remains free forever, and will continue receiving updates permanently. Downloading, installing, using and updating Community costs nothing. All future Community updates are free, without a subscription, paid upgrade or sponsorship requirement. Sponsorship is entirely voluntary and does not affect access to Community features or updates.
Android edition (beta)
Section titled “Android edition (beta)”We also offer ECHO Android, currently a beta version. Features, interface and device compatibility are still being refined. Follow the Android repository and the release notes for your build.
- Project and source: Official ECHO Android GitHub repository.
- Beta installers and update notes: GitHub Releases. Download the APK from the corresponding release to install it.
- Beta feedback: GitHub Issues. Include the app version, device model and reproduction steps.
The table below compares desktop Community and Steam. Android features and release progress follow the Android project’s own documentation.

Practical differences: implementation, updates and stability
Section titled “Practical differences: implementation, updates and stability”Access and working playback are separate
Section titled “Access and working playback are separate”Community Pro availability describes access. Reliable operation also depends on your build and its implementation. The Community 26.9.25 release notes record known DSP issues. Check in-app notices and the actual signal path when using EQ, correction or SRC / SDM.
Steam follows its own release path for local playback, audio processing, Steam integration and Workshop. Community updates do not automatically contain every Steam fix, and Steam updates do not upgrade Community. Check version, release notes and actual playback state together.
Buying Steam or Pro does not guarantee support for every DAC, rate, DSD mode or compute backend. Comparing resource usage, responsiveness or sound requires the same hardware, library and settings; one screenshot cannot establish a general result.
Steam has its own content ecosystem
Section titled “Steam has its own content ecosystem”Workshop distributes themes, lyrics scenes, visualizers, presets and sandboxed plugins through Steam subscriptions and updates. Apply an item in ECHO and approve its permissions after subscribing. Items that need Pro processing still require the DLC. See Steam Workshop.
Community plugins and themes use Community’s own entry points and formats; direct compatibility with Workshop content is not promised. Steam does not run legacy Community main-process / Node plugins.
Steam friend invitations are Steam integration. Listen Together audio sharing uses an independent room server, rather than Steam Cloud transferring songs. Joining, sharing and compatibility between editions depend on client and server capabilities. See Listen Together.
Current free policy and older installers
Section titled “Current free policy and older installers”The maintainer’s September 27, 2026 notice confirms all Pro features were opened in that day’s Community build. Sponsorship is voluntary.
Updating documentation does not change an older installer. The historical 26.9.25 notes still describe earlier DSP entitlement checks; they describe a different point in time. If Community still asks for activation or shows locked features, check the build and download source, read its update notes, then report the problem with a screenshot. Do not buy an old license for features that are free under current policy.
Source is available in the public repository. Personal noncommercial builds are an additional option. Copying, modification and redistribution remain subject to the applicable license.
Platforms, data and switching
Section titled “Platforms, data and switching”Windows is the current official Steam release line. Community 26.9.25 also provides macOS Apple Silicon packages without Developer ID signing or notarization. Its Mac updater has not been validated through a real upgrade; follow the release notes and update manually. Verify Linux and other platforms separately rather than treating build support as official Steam support.
Both editions can coexist with separate data folders. Do not overwrite installation folders; libraries, playlists and history do not merge automatically. Follow Backup and Migration before switching, then import music files in the target edition.
Portable settings sync through Steam Cloud is off by default. When enabled, it transfers only selected settings, not music, the catalog, playlists or individual history entries. Export settings and back up Community data yourself; Cloud is not a backup replacement.
Choosing an edition
Section titled “Choosing an edition”- Choose Community for free local music management and available advanced features, while following its release notes for build issues.
- Choose Steam for library-based installation and updates, Workshop content, achievements and friend status.
- Add Pro DLC if you use Steam and need DSP, SRC / SDM, remote libraries, Radio or Connect.
